The 314th Recorded Meeting in the 351st year of The Society of Archers
ANTIENT SILVER ARROW
was held at Harrogate Rugby Club
on Saturday 20th May 2023

The Clerks Report

The 20th day of May 2023 saw gentlemen gather at Harrogate Rugby Club for the 314th Recorded meeting of the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow Tournament. 83 gentlemen shot with 64 carrying the longbow. The weather was warm sunny but a challenging breeze.

Lieutenant Ian Marr sounded the bugle to bring the gentleman to order. The Captain, Clive Roebuck welcomed everyone to the shoot. The Clerk advised the Arrow had been returned and was available to be shot for, reminding the gentleman of their responsibilities.

Shooting got underway at 10.30am prompt with the Captain and Lieutenant taking aim. No reds or golds were recorded on the first end but the following end saw Scorton newbie John Pawson record the best red with his longbow. Congratulations followed, a few ends later Barebow archer Richard Allan hit the coveted black spot. Shock and disbelief were etched on the face of Richard but this soon relaxed to a feeling of excitement.

Shooting continued throughout the morning for the allotted 2 hours before the usual luncheon was taken in the Rugby Club. The quick but effective meeting annual meeting passed without concern, ending with the Captain, Clive Roebuck presenting the Captain elect and Lieutenant elect with their relevant brooches. The gentlemen returned to the field for a further 2 hours shooting with the Judges overseeing the usual good humoured banter between archers.

The Captain’s son presented the trophies to the deserving winners, together with the usual glasses to the Lady Scorers. Finally the usual bottles to the two judges.

The meeting was rounded off by the retiring Captain passing his thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the day.

The proceeds of the swear bag and other donations went to the Captain’s chosen charity, the Sir Robert Ogden Centre, Harrogate. A total donation of £120.60 was made from the swear bag. A total of £229.70 was donated from the day.

Minutes of the 314th Meeting – 21st May 2023

The Captain Clive Roebuck, asked those present to be up standing for the Loyal Toast.  Gentlemen archers, who had shot the bow with the Captain in the morning, were asked to remain standing whilst guests retired from the room.

The Captain then proposed the toasts to The Society and The Arrow, The Captain and Lieutenant Elect and absent friends.

The Lieutenant, Ian Marr, read the minutes of the 313th meeting. These were accepted as a true record, with the Captain duly signing the Record Book.

Apologies for absence were received beforehand from Malcolm and Marc Grady, Clive and Richard Nuttall, Steve Lilley, Gary Sandles, Adrian Hayes and Ken Billings.

The following matters were discussed:

  • A response was received from the Palace shortly after the 2022 shoot, and was read out to the meeting.
  • His Majesty, The King had been sent the usual Loyal Message and Single White Rose.  To date no reply has yet been received.
  • Website – There had been a blip around Christmas/New Year when the website went offline. This was due to the hosting that Philip Rolls had kindly paid for coming to an end. That was rectified with a hosting package taken out.
  • The accounts for The Society presented.  The current funds stand at £5,254.46, a slight increase on the previous year.
  • The Clerk reported that he’d looked for and taken out different insurance for the event that had resulted in the cost going down by just over £120 to £167.44.
  • No items had been received prior to the meeting for discussion.
  • The Captain, Clive Roebuck asked for approval to present the contents of the “Swear Bag” to his chosen charity The Robert Ogden Centre, Harrogate. This was unanimously approved by the Gentlemen present.
  • The Captain elect and Lieutenant elect, were then presented with their Captain and Lieutenant brooches, by the Captain.

There being no further business the meeting was closed at 14.20
