The Clerks Report
The 31st day of July 2021 saw gentlemen gather at Harrogate Rugby Club for the 312th Recorded meeting of the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow Tournament. 72 gentlemen shot with 64 carrying the longbow.
Lieutenant Stewart Atkinson sounded the bugle to bring the gentleman to order. The Captain, Gordon Marshall welcomed everyone to the shoot following the difficult times with the Covid pandemic, and the cancellation of the 2020 shoot. The Clerk advised the Arrow had been returned and was available to be shot for, reminding the gentleman of their responsibilities.
Shooting got underway at 10.30am prompt with the Captain and Lieutenant taking aim. At the first end very, few arrows hit the target and no reds or golds were recorded. The following end saw Tom Fewz, past captain and lieutenant, just beat Chris Battersby, himself a past captain, to the Best Red to become Lieutenant Elect.
Shooting continued throughout the morning and shortly before the lunch break Tom Fewz became Captain Elect in shooting the first black spot, thus meaning Chris Battersby was promoted to Lieutenant Elect. Warm congratulations were given to both.
The lunch break was soon upon us with an excellent luncheon taken followed by the usual quick and efficient annual meeting.
With the meeting concluded shooting continued for a further 2 hours with the Judges overseeing the usual good humoured banter between archers.
Afternoon tea was taken followed by the Captain’s lady, Carole, presenting the Trophies to the deserving winners. The presentations were concluded with the gifts to the Lady Scorers, and the usual bottles and glassware to the two judges.
The meeting was rounded off by the retiring Captain passing his thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the day.
The proceeds of the swear bag and other donations went to the Captain’s chosen charity, MIND. A total donation of £321.50 was made.
