on Saturday 20th May 2017
The Clerks Report
The 20th day of May 2017 saw gentlemen gather at the Phoenix Sports Club, Rotherham for the 309th Recorded meeting of the Antient Scorton Silver Arrow Tournament. 94 gentlemen shot with 71 carrying the longbow. The day dawned sunny with a moderate strengthening wind.
Lieutenant Richard Nuttall sounded the bugle to bring the gentleman to order. The Captain, Dereck Wilcock welcomed everyone to the shoot, advising The Arrow had been returned and was available to be shot for.
Shooting got underway at 10.30am prompt with the Captain and Lieutenant taking aim. With neither gold nor red hit, this led to the rest of the archers shooting. With testing windy conditions very few reds were scored at the first end but the best of those fell to Peter Rogers who was declared Lieutenant Elect. Shooting continued for over an hour before David McLaren, a first time Scorton longbow archer, recorded the first Black Spot thus becoming the Captain Elect.
Shooting continued for the 2 hours in gradually deteriorating conditions of wind and rain, until the Judges called time for lunch. A hearty lunch was taken followed by a quick but efficient annual meeting.
With the meeting concluded shooting continued for a further 2 hours with the Judges overseeing the usual good hunoured banter between archers.
Afternoon tea was taken followed by the Captain’s Lady presented the Trophies to the deserving winners. The presentations were concluded with the gifts to the Lady Scorers, and the usual bottles to the two judges.
The meeting was rounded off by the retiring Captain passing his thanks to all those involved in the organisation of the day.
The proceeds of the swear bag and other donations went to the Captain’s chosen charity, The Yorkshire Air Ambulance, the proceeds amounting to some £207.

Minutes of the 309th Meeting – 20th May 2017
Minutes of the 309th Recorded Meeting held at Phoenix Sports & Social Club, Rotherham, South Yorkshire on 20th May 2017.
The Captain Dereck Wilcock, asked those present to be up standing for the Loyal Toast. Gentlemen archers, who had shot the bow with the Captain in the morning, were asked to remain standing whilst guests retired from the room.
The Captain then proposed the toasts to The Society and The Arrow, The Captain and Lieutenant Elect and absent friends.
The Lieutenant, Richard Nuttall, read the minutes of the 308th meeting. These were accepted as a true record, with the Captain duly signing the Record Book.
Apologies for absence were received before hand from 11 Gentlemen.
The following matters were discussed:
• Her Majesty, The Queen had been sent the White Rose and Loyal Message and a reply received for her Chief Clerk. A reply was also received, acknowledging the Rose and Message, a few days after the 2016 Meeting.
• Marc Grady displayed a longbow, made by Ron Palmer and planned to be delivered to a Gentleman Archer at a Meeting many years ago. The hand over had not taken place and Marc asked if anyone knew who the bow was meant to be delivered to, so that he could hand it over. None of the Gentlemen present indicated they knew who was due to receive it.
• The accounts for The Society discussed. The current funds stand at £4858.50 and there was an increase of over £400 over the previous year. The costs to the Society each year for the Calligraphy, Captain and Lieutenant Brooches and insurance come to approximately £500. In 2016 the proceeds from the raffles, donations and bank interest amounted to over £700, showing that currently income is covering the costs. The accounts were approved.
• The Draft Proposal with regard to Article 23 and the distribution of the “Swear Bag” proceeds was brought to the meeting and passed for Formal Notice and vote at the 2018 AGM
• The Captain, Dereck Wilcock asked for approval to present the contents of the “Swear Bag” to the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. This was unanimously approved by the Gentlemen present.
• The Captain elect and Lieutenant elect, were then presented with their Captain and Lieutenant brooches, by the Captain.
There being no further business the meeting was closed at 14.49.
