The 291th Recorded Meeting in the 327th year of
The Society of Archers
held at High Melton College, Nr Doncaster, South Yorkshire
on Saturday 22nd May 1999

The Clerks Report

On a windy May 22nd 1999 81 Gentlemen took to the field for the 291st recorded meeting of The Society of Archers at High Melton College near Doncaster.

The Lieutenancy was again taken by Derek Wilcock of Thirsk, with his second arrow, the Captaincy going shortly afterwards to George Brown of Mansfield.

Shooting stopped as usual after two hours to enable the Gentlemen to refuel, a good luncheon was partaken along with some good wines, followed by another two hours of arrows being blown onto the next target.

Eight of the Lady scorers suddenly found themselves roofless in their tent; this was quickly put right by a band of stalwarts from the field.

54 Longbowmen, 27 Recurve archers made up the numbers who donated £37.21 to the Swear Bag. As the Vicar of the Parish did not arrive to take the proceeds the Captain said that he would give it to his local Salvation Army, a decision approved by all.

After thanks to the caterers for excellent food and service the Captain’s Lady Mrs Pauline Seddon presented the Trophies and Sweepstakes.

Mr Stanley Snow., Clerk to the Society.

Minutes of the 291st Meeting – 22nd May 1999

After the Loyal toast, the ladies and those who had not drawn the Bow with the Captain were asked to leave, and the meeting started with the Captain proposing the toast to the Society, the Arrow, the Captain and the Lieutenant elect.

The minutes of the 290th meeting were read by the Lieutenant and duly signed by the Captain.

There being no matters arising, the Clerk rose to give his report. He informed the meeting that the White Rose and message had been dispatched to Buckingham Palace, that a reply had been received form the Queen’s Lady in Waiting, and this was read out to the assembled Archers.

Apologies were received from B Norbury, M Leach, B Broughton, P Garner, C Broad, C Line, E Chattaway, and again, much to his disgust, from Roger Crees, who is awaiting spare-part surgery. A suggestion to send Roger a get well card was unanimously agreed, a menu (which many members signed) was sent. The Clerk reported that the Reserve Fund now stood at £2,923.52, also that the Society had purchased two Gazebo type tents for the Scorers. Donations to the Reserve Fund were received from E Chattaway, B Norbury and C Hope.

A suggestion by letter, that that the Arrow should be kept in a secure place and just brought out for presentation at the meeting was discussed. The idea being that a Museum, the Royal Armouries at Leeds for example, be approached to take the Arrow and put it on display for periods of time, and that the Society be granted custody of it for a few days each year for presentation. The custodians for the Society being the Captain or Clerk of the time. A vote was taken on the idea, and it was decided to follow it up and report to the 292nd meeting in the year 2000, only 7 votes were counted against the idea.

The Captain thanked Chantry Bowmen of Rotherham and members of his own club Dearne Valley Archers for all their assistance.

There being no further discussions the shooting recommenced at 3.30pm.
