on the 26th day of May 1984
The Clerks Report
Be it recorded that at 10.15 o’clock on the 26th May 1984 at the butts of the White Rose Archers the Lieutenant sounded the Bugle to summon the Gentlemen present. The Captain welcomed those present and recorded that there were 91 Gentlemen shooting this day which is the highest number to be at a meeting in the history of the Society. The Judge, Mr W G Aldred reminded the gentlemen of the rules of the Society and shooting commenced at 10.30 o’clock with the Captain and Lieutenant being first to shoot.
The first item of note was the piercing of the Red in the first end by Mr John Owens, thereby becoming the Lieutenant Elect and holder of the Silver Bugle for the ensuing year. The second item of note was the piercing of the inner gold in the third end by Mr Barry Norbury, thereby becoming the Captain Elect and holder of the Antient Scorton Arrow for the ensuing year. Shooting continued for two hours in pleasant weather after which the Captain and Gentlemen retired to Kershaw House for luncheon and to hold the 276th recorded meeting of the Society.
Shooting recommenced after luncheon for a further two hours in a happy and pleasant manner whereafter the Gentlemen retired for tea and presentation of the Trophies and Prizes by the Captain’s Lady, Mrs Anne Noblet. Closing the meeting the Captain thanked the Scorers, Judge, Clerk and all who had helped for their invaluable assistance.

Minutes of the 1984 Meeting
Following the customary Loyal Toast and Toasts to The Arrow and Society and to the Captain Elect – Lieutenant Elect, the Captain caused the Minutes of the 275th recorded meeting to be read by the Lieutenant.
There were no matters arising. The Clerk gave the apologies for absence from past Captain Bill Wales, Robert Hardy, Michael Aliston, John Odd and son, Alan Thorley and Alan Turner.
Her Majesty’s reply to our address of Loyal greetings sent during the 1983 meeting was read and the Clerk explained the use of Interflora to convey our loyal wishes, today, in the absence of the telegram service.
The loss of equipment by the Woodmen of Arden by theft was much regretted and the Gentlemen were asked to give any assistance possible.
A motion was received suggesting the introduction of the whole of the Gold for Longbowmen and a reduced Black spot for curley bows as a target for the arrows but this was heavily defeated.
It was moved and agreed that the definition of a longbow should be that laid down by the British Longbow Society with the added premise that horn nochs were acceptable. It was further agreed that self nochs were acceptable.
The Captain closed the Meeting with the Society’s thanks and appreciation to the White Rose Archers and their ladies for their kind and invaluable assistance with the field.
