The 221st Recorded Meeting in the 239th year of
The Society of Archers
held at Settle, North Yorkshire
on Tuesday the 12th day of September 1911
Settle 12th September 1911
Be it well remembered as the first entry in a new minute book that the first recorded winner of the Scorton Arrow was Henry Calverley Esquire who won it at Scorton on May 14, 1673 when 22 archers competed.
Two hundred and thirty eight years after, 17 archers assembled on the grounds of the North Ribblesdale Archers to compete for the same arrow.
The weather was very bad. With his eighth arrow Mr Coates hit the Gold and thus became Captain for 1911.
Mr Cadman with his second arrow hit the red and thus became Lieutenant.
Shooting ceased at 4.30 and the trophies etc were presented by Miss Stansfelck of Belfield, Giggleswick to whom on the proposition of Mr Prince, the Captain for the day, a hearty vote of thanks was accorded as also to the members of the North Ribblesdale Archery Club for allowing the use of the ground and targets and also to Mrs Edgar who most kindly provided afternoon tea.
Before the shooting commenced Mr Dodington moved a resolution to the effect that a gold by a first arrow should knock out a better gold with a second arrow, this resolution was pro forma seconded by Mr Hepworth to allow of discussion. On being put to the meeting it was lost. As a matter of fact the point had been decided on August 27th, 1823.
