The 289th Recorded Meeting in the 325th year of the Society, saw 85 Gentlemen assemble on the 24th of May 1997, to shoot with the Captain, Pete Davies, for the Ancient Scorton Silver Arrow and other Trophies.

The meeting was held in Easingwold, North Yorkshire, and of the Gentlemen present 62 were longbowmen.

The Arrow and the Lieutenant's Bugle were taken early in the day, Steve Sharman winning the Arrow and Noel Lawrence the Bugle. Colin Hope and Adrian Hayes took the Longbow Trophies with excellent performances. Noel Lawrence also took the Thirsk Arrow and Gold Medal for Captain of Numbers. Gary Aldred was the winner of the Gold Medal for the highest score. The Thirsk Silver Medal and the Phillips Cup went to Tony Sutton and Steve Sharman.

The past Captain will donate the swear monies to his Parish; an amount of £42.85 which was collected by the Judges, Dennis Heritage and Paul Senior.

After tea the Trophies were presented by the Captain's Lady, Mrs Viv Davies.

Minutes of the 289th Meeting on 24th May 1997


After the Toasts to the Society, the Arrow and Captain and Lieutenant elect, the Lieutenant read the minutes of the last meeting which were signed by the Captain.

There were no matters arising. Four gentlemen tendered their apologies for absence. The Clerk read H M The Queen's message of thanks and good wishes to the Society.

Matters from the Floor - It was proposed that a red rose be included in the loyal message to H M The Queen together with the white rose of Yorkshire. This was defeated by a large majority.

It was proposed, once again, that bare bows shoot for the whole Gold and recurves shoot for the inner black spot. This was firmly defeated and it was also decided that the matter would not be raised again for 4 years.

It was decided that compliments to the ladies would be reserved for the end of the meeting and that there would not be applause at luncheon when the ladies withdrew, only the customary rising by the gentlemen.

Owing to meals for guests not being taken up, as ordered, it was agreed that a payment for each guest included in the entry form should have a sum of £10.00 added. In the case of tea only being requested, the sum of £1.50 for each guest should be added..

It was recorded that the cases of the two Gold Medals require attention and it was agreed that repairs should be put in hand and the costs arising be met from the Interest Account of the Reserve Fund.

Thanks were expressed to the Captain and the Clerk and the Meeting closed at 3.00pm.
