Harrogate 14th August 1957

It is hereby recorded that on the fourteenth day of August in the year of Our Lord, one thousand, nine hundred & fifty seven, was held the two hundred and fortyninth Meeting, this being in the two hundred and eighty fifth recorded year of the Society.

By most kind invitation and favour of the Mayor and Corporation of Harrogate the venue was the West Park Stray, where shooting took place amidst surroundings of great beauty.

Pursuant to custom lots were drawn for order of precedence at the Targets, and commencement of shooting was heralded at ten forty five in the forenoon by the Lieutenant sounding on his bugle.

Be it remembered that shooting took place in sunshine with a fair breeze blowing across the Stray, and in accordance with tradition continued for two hours before and two hours after luncheon.

The first item of note the piercing of the Red by Mr Alan Birkbeck of the Bowmen of Silver Cross who thus became holder of the Bugle & Lieutenant for the ensuing year.

The second item of note was the piercing of the Inner Gold by Mr S S Henderson of the Bowmen of Adel, who thus became the holder of the Antient Scorton Arrow and Captain for the ensuing year.

Be it remembered that an excellent luncheon was served in the West Park Hotel at conclusion of which the minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed after being read and duly signed.

According to custom the expenses of the meeting were shared by the Gentlemen Archers present.

The Meeting discussed the question of provision of a permanent badge or brooch for Captains of the Arrow & after due consideration to previous decisions it was agreed that Captains be allowed to provide a suitable permanent emblem at their own expense.

Be it also remembered that a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the following for their contribution to the success of the Meeting: To the Captain, Mr Gerald Dyson and the Lieutenant, Mr Frank Newbould for their most excellent arrangements. To the Mayor and Corporation of Harrogate for the facilities provided. To Mr Frank Petty for his skill in acting as Judge of the Meeting and to Mr George Collinson, Chief Scorer & his able assistants for their untiring efforts.

At the conclusion of shooting in the afternoon, tea was provided by kind hospitality of Harrogate Corporation. After tea prizes were gracefully presented by Mrs Frank Petty to whom a hearty vote of thanks was accorded by the Company.

Be it ever remembered that this concluded a very happy and successful meeting and here follow the names of the Prize Winners and the Scores by all the Gentlemen Archers.
