The above photograph was kindly received in December 2008 from Ron Ashworth of Kingston, Ontario, Canada - 53 years since the picture was taken.
The picture shows John Hatton (Captain 1955) with the Antient Silver Arrow which he had taken along to another competition (hence the reason for lady archers in the picture).
On the left are Audrey and Frank Turton of Torrisholme, Lancaster and on the right Sheila and Ron.
Ron tells me they had recently formed the Loyne Archers Club in Lancaster and were rightly proud of one of their members winning the coverted 'Scorton Arrow'.
Be it hereby recorded that on this day 62 Archers assembled
on the ground at Roundhay Park on the occasion of the 247th meeting
of the Society to compete for the Ancient Silver Arrow and other Prizes.
Shooting commenced at 10.45 in warm sunshine & perfect shooting weather prevailed throughout the competition.
Be it ever remembered that in the first end the inner Gold was twice pierced, each with their first arrow by Mr F Miles & more centrally by Mr J A G Hatton (Loyne Archers) who thereby became Captain Elect.
Also in the first end Mr A Dobson (Bronte Archers) did pierce the Red most centrally & thus became Lieutenant and holder of the Silver Bugle.
After luncheon the minutes of the previous Meeting were read, confirmed & duly signed.
Be it remembered that a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to the Judge Mr P Grigsby & to Mr G Collinson the Chief Scorer, his assistants & all whose assistance had contributed to the success of the meeting.
Shooting continued for a further two hours in the afternoon at the conclusion of which the prizes were gracefully presented by the Lady Paramount, Lady Croysdale to whom a vote of thanks and three hearty cheers were accorded by the Company.
Be it remembered that seven dozen & eight arrows were shot at this most enjoyable meeting.
