Often
described as 'The Daddy of
all Sporting Fixtures'; The Antient
Silver Arrow, is the World's longest
established and oldest recorded
sporting event, dating back to 1673
and first shot for in Scorton Village,
North Yorkshire, organised by
The Society of Archers.
The
Society of Archers was
formed at the first meeting of the
Antient Silver Arrow Competition,
to maintain Target Archery, the
skill of which was largely in
decline following the English
Civil War.
The
success of our 337 year
longevity rests within our truly
democratic and sporting
foundations that have stood the
the passage of time:
Where
members compete
against one another for the
prestigious Antient Silver Arrow
and being awarded the annual
Captaincy, won with the skill of
the Bow, being the first archer
to pierce the 3 inch Black
Spot at 100 yards and thus
taking on the onus but privileged
responsibility to arrange the next
meeting. Assisted by a Lieutenant,
being the first Archer to hit
the Red.
In
2009 we celebrated our 301
Annual Recorded Tournament in
the Societies 337 year history,
which was held in Hull, East
Yorkshire on the 16th May,
once again meeting to decide the
outcome of the World's longest
established and oldest recorded
sporting event.
